Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, is considering handing Thibaut Courtois his first Capital One Cup appearance of the season in Tuesday night’s first leg of the semi-final at Anfield.
Petr Cech has played in all three of Chelsea’s Capital One Cup games en route to the last four and the 32-year-old goalkeeper has also deputised for Courtois in Chelsea’s past three matches without conceding a goal.
Courtois broke his thumb during his last appearance, when he conceded five goals against Tottenham Hotspur, and has not been risked since. But the 22-year-old trained without pain over the weekend, which gives Mourinho a dilemma tonight.
It is understood his initial plan, before the Belgian got injured, had been to bring Courtois in at the semi-final stage. Although Courtois has played in a Champions League final for Atletico Madrid, he has yet to play in a big occasion for Chelsea.
Recalling him now would almost certainly mean that he would start at Wembley if Chelsea were to reach the final. Cech would not be happy about being dropped for a semi-final after keeping three successive clean sheets, but could be offered an immediate recall for the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Bradford on Saturday.

On his goalkeepers, Mourinho said: “I have the two best keepers in the league. Yes, Courtois is fit, but not 100 per cent, but how many players are during the season? There is always a pain here and there, a swollen ankle or something like that. Lots of keepers have strapping. I repeat, I have the two best keepers.”
Although the break itself was not a big problem, Courtois had been feeling recurring pain but is now ready to declare himself fit to start.
Despite the fact that Chelsea won at Liverpool in the Premier League in November, Mourinho admitted that he still had bad memories of Anfield semi-finals after the 2005 Champions League defeat. Luis García was awarded a goal for a shot that replays proved did not cross the line to send Chelsea out and Liverpool into the Champions League final, where they famously beat AC Milan.
“I like to play at Anfield,” Mourinho said. “It’s difficult, but I like it, although I have some difficult memories. To lose a Champions League semi-final with a goal that was not a goal stays with you forever. Of course, it still hurts and in the Capital One Cup there is no goal-line technology, so we are free to have the same happen.
“We played at Anfield a couple of months ago and there was no problem. It is an historical stadium. Who doesn’t like to go there and play there? I like it, my players like it, so there are only good feelings to play at Anfield.”
Chelsea face the FA Cup tie against Bradford in between the two legs of their Capital One Cup semi-final before entertaining Premier League title rivals Manchester City at the end of the month. The London club are also still in the Champions League, but Mourinho does not believe that a historic quadruple is a realistic possibility. “It is a good week. A semi-final in the Capital One Cup, FA Cup matches are always enjoyable even if you play against a lower-league side, then next week we have the second leg against Liverpool and Man City at home, it is good.”
Asked if the quadruple was possible, Mourinho said: “No, I don’t think so. It’s possible to play for that and it’s possible to motivate yourself with that, but to win the lot I don’t think it’s possible.”
John Terry is expecting a testing evening and the Chelsea captain insisted that he and his team-mates could not afford to prioritise any match or competition. “It’s going to be a tough place,” he said. “Daniel Sturridge is back, Raheem Sterling looks like he’s back as well and they proved, when we went up there in the league, that it’s a tough game.
“You have to forget form and where they are. That kind of goes out of the window. It’s Chelsea-Liverpool. I just hope we are strong enough. I think the performance at Swansea has set the tone for Tuesday and then the big one [against Manchester City].
“You cannot prioritise and say one is bigger than the other, but it’s a big week.”
